This past weekend, April 13th through April 15th, Tiger student-athletes were extremely busy giving back to the greater Princeton community across three distinct Princeton Varsity Club service project.
Friday, April 13th: 30 student-athletes from a variety of sports participated in “Reading with the Tigers” at two local Princeton elementary schools, Community Park and Johnson Park. Student-athletes read books to elementary school children between the ages of Kindergarten and 3rd grade. Several Tiger student-athletes even read books in Spanish to one of Community Park’s dual-immersion classrooms.

Saturday, April 14th: In partnership with the Princeton Varsity Club, Princeton Faith in Action and the Pace Center, the Student-Athlete Service Council (SASC) organized the second annual I-RISE & Run 5K to raise money for IRISE, an organization that helps resettle local refugees. Princeton students and members of the local community gathered on the beautiful Saturday morning for the 5K run/walk, all while raising money for a very important cause.

Sunday, April 15th: For the third consecutive year, the Princeton Football team teamed with the PVC for its annual “Weapons of Mass Construction” Princeton Garden Project. The Garden Project is organized in partnership with the Princeton School Gardens Cooperative and the goal is to get local school gardens ready for spring planting. 35 vrsity football players turned soil, planted hedges, uprooted old trees, trimmed rose bushes, weeded, and prepared multiple beds that would be used for educational programming within the four local elementary schools (Johnson Park, Community Park, Riverside, and Littlebrook).
The group also prepared gardens at the Harriet Bryan House, a senior center that provides apartments for low income elderly residents. This particular garden is accessible to every member of the Harriet Bryan House community and has a very positive impact on the residents’ lives at the center.
