Princeton Athletics is proud to announce an anonymous gift from two members of the Class of 1989 that will support the Princeton Varsity Club letter sweater program.
The endowed fund provides the Princeton Varsity Club with the ability to continue distributing letter sweaters to graduating varsity student-athletes across all varsity programs. Letter sweaters are presented at the culmination of the annual Gary Walters ’67 PVC Awards Banquet on the Thursday preceding Commencement.
“We are incredibly grateful for this generous gift which will ensure that we are able to continue a very meaningful tradition that recognizes and honors the commitment of our varsity student-athletes. This program is a powerful way to connect athletes across all of our sports and to celebrate their contributions to Princeton Athletics,” noted John Mack ’00, Ford Family Director of Athletics.
In addition to providing varsity letter sweaters, the fund will provide support for lifetime memberships in the Princeton Varsity Club for one or more young alumni annually who are serving their community with distinction.
The anonymous donors noted that “the leadership skills Princeton’s student-athletes develop while competing for the Orange and the Black will serve them throughout their lives and we are pleased to honor their commitment to their sport and our school with this gift.”
The Princeton Varsity Club began providing letter sweaters free of charge to all graduating varsity senior student-athletes in the Spring of 2007, but the history and tradition of the Princeton letter sweater dates back to the late 1800’s/early 1900’s. Prior to funding from the Princeton Varsity Club, sweaters were distributed on a sport-by-sport basis.
Princeton letter sweaters are exclusive 100% knit wool sweaters with the 6” varsity Princeton P sewn on the front. Black letter sweaters are awarded to graduating student-athletes who are members of a varsity athletic team while white letter sweaters are awarded to captains of undefeated league championship teams, captains of undisputed national championship teams or to an individual national champion.
